In 1982, the Official Mint of the People’s Republic of China issued and introduced a series of gold bullion coins. They named it the Chinese Gold Panda (or Gold Panda). These coins come in various sizes, ranging from 1⁄20 to 1 troy ounce (1.6 to 31.1 grams) (and larger ones as well).
The Gold Pandas are a legal tender in the in the People’s Republic of China. The Mint currently issues them in face value denominations of 500, 200, 100, 50, and 20 yuan. Meanwhile, back in 1982 to 2000, the Mint issued the Gold Pandas in denominations of 100, 50, 25, and 10 yuan, adding the 5 yuan in 1983.
Design
The reverse of these coins would always depict a panda. The panda portraits on these coins change every year, except for 2001 and 2002, during which the coin shared the same panda design. It featured a panda crawling on hay with a few stalks of bamboo on the side.
The obverse of the coin, on the other hand, features the Temple of Heavenin the center with Chinese characters on top saying “Zhonghua Renmin Gongheguo” meaning People’s Republic of China and the bottom the year of issue. If the issue is a commemorative issue, the theme will be marked here also.
Value
The Chinese Gold Panda coins are considered as tokens of stability against inflation. Most individuals choose to invest on the .999 gold version of the Chinese Panda coins over the silver ones. Annually, Chinese mints manufacture these artistically crafted coins made from gold mined solely within China. While different mints in China strike these prized panda coins, they are actually released in rather small quantities, making them rare and highly sought-after, leaving enthusiasts and collectors squirming with anticipation each year.
