Overview

The Liberty Walking half dollar, also referred to as a Walking Liberty half dollar emerged to be a popular coin at that time because of its majestic design. Robert W. Woolley, a mint director, decided to conduct a design competition through the Commission of Fine Arts to replace the dime, quarter, and half dollar. Eventually, Weinman’s design of Lady Liberty won the design competition.

Design

The obverse features the Liberty walking and holding branches with the United States flag and Sun on the eastern horizon in terms of its stunning design. The reverse design depicts a bald eagle rising from a mountaintop perch. It is no surprise that numismatists love the Walking Liberty Half dollar because of its stunning design. It is even considered one of the most beautiful coins ever made in the United States, making it among the most popular collectible coins.

Three mint facilities struck Liberty Walking half dollars. These were Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco mints. All of them placed their mint mark on the coin’s obverse just below the motto “In God We Trust”. But sometime in 1917, the mint decided to move the mint mark to the reverse of the coin in the lower left quadrant.
